[Seminar Series] TMJ aka The Jaw

Welcome to our Seminar Series. Today Dr Keegan, one of our Life Movement chiropractors, talks about TMJ pain also know as jaw pain.

TMJ?

Considered a multidimensional biopsychosocial disorder that has genetic and immunologic basis that shares common features, not only with other musculoskeletal conditions, such as fibromyalgia, low back pain, and headache, but also with idiopathic inflammatory conditions such as joint pain, IBS, vuluodynia, and other somatic and visceral deep tissue injuries

All this means we need to consider the TMJ, Mandible, Neck, Nervous System and a bunch of other structures when handling the jaw dysfunction.

Research generally favours splint therapy, PT, exercises, CBT over drugs, surgery and orthodontics as treatment for TMD.

Can Physical Therapy Treat?

-Good chance: Mandibular Postural Stress, Masticatory muscle pain, Capsulo-ligamentous disorders, HA, Chronic upper Cx
-Moderate chance: Pain Assoc w/ intra-articular derangement, Synovitis, Early DJD, Central o/ Bruxism
-Poor chance: Chronic Sensitization, Advanced DJD, Clicking Joints, Systemic Inflammatory conditions.

[Seminar Series] Overactive Sympathetics?

Welcome to our Seminar Series. Today Dr Keegan, one of our Life Movement chiropractors, talks about the overactive sympathetic nervous system (sympathetics) and what can through this out of balance.

Sympathetics what?

I know right. In a nutshell this refers to the fight and flight part of your nervous system and the parts of the body that change when you are in a stressful situation. So when its overactive, its switched on more than we need – creating unbalance and various possible symptoms.

So what we do?
We have various physiological, neurological, chemical and mental aspects affecting our health. Some that may impact our sympathetic nervous system include:
-Light
-Sound
-Posture
-The Gut
-Meditation
-Plus other lifestyle factors

[Seminar Series] New Toy – Flexion Distraction

Welcome to our Seminar Series. Today Dr Keegan, one of our Life Movement chiropractors, shows off our new portable table with a new special feature – Flexion Distraction.

Flexion Distraction:

-commonly used with disc herniation, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and facet syndrome.
-aims to increasing disc height, reducing pressure within within the nucleus pulposus, and increasing the area of the intervertebral foramen.

Learn more: Cox Flexion Distraction
“The goals of Cox Technic protocols are attainable with the right understanding and cooperation between patient and doctor and time. It takes time to heal a disc and time to recover from spine involved injuries. The pain from an inflammed disc may go away in a day or two, but it takes time to let that disc heal sufficiently to withstand all the normal pressure of day-to-day living.”

This Quick Foot Tip: Wake Up those toes!

The work your toes, esp your big toe, does to support the arch of your foot is massive. So consistently moving and waking up those little piggies can remove some of that foot tension.

– Toe Grip focuses on strengthening and spreading out your toes.

– Toe Reanimation is another good activity to complement TV watching.
